Sometimes the simplest things can be the most amusing. I haven’t had an afternoon to sit at Starbucks, drink some coffee, and watch the world go by in quite some time. To say I miss this would be an understatement. There are so many stories that happen in and around a little Starbucks as people go about their daily lives.

For example, in the hour I’ve been sitting here I’ve noticed quite a few little stories unfold in front of me. There was a couple with a baby who changed their baby’s diaper in the trunk of their car. Another couple the husband waited in the car until after the wife had time to loudly talk to the partners and order her coffee. He conveniently came in after she went to the restroom and waited for the coffee. As she returned and again began talking loudly, he conveniently and quietly slipped back out to their car to wait. I don’t know the backstory here but it all seemed quite intentional.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed today however is that many people have a very hard time parking between the lines. I will admit that in some parking lots, this can really be a challenge. The parking lot in question has slots that aren’t any bigger or smaller than any other parking lot. The driving area in the lot is definitely smaller and loops around tightly with not a lot of extra space and only one exit. This leads to some interesting congestion when bigger vehicles or vehicles with trailers try to enter it… and it doesn’t go so well.

The lines in this parking lot are double between each spot, creating a little extra space between cars. In theory, this should make it easier for a vehicle to end up between them. However, this is not the case today. In fact, it seems like they aren’t even used as a guide. Generally, a car that is pulling into a parking spot would be perpendicular to the curb it is pulling up to. This hasn’t been happening today. Instead, most cars have been coming in at some very random angles.

One would think that this could be a problem for bigger vehicles, however, a sporty little car also found it very difficult to pull straight into a spot and also within the lines. I also noticed that all of the cars I’ve noticed that can’t park between the lines did not make a second attempt at getting the car straighter or within the lines. My last observation, the nicer the car the harder it is to park between the lines… at least from today’s observations. This surprises me a little bit as I would think it’d be easier to get a door ding when parking off-center and closer to the neighboring car.

Going back to the couple changing their baby’s diaper in the trunk of their car. They had actually backed in and were also squarely and perfectly between the lines of their parking spot. Kudos to them!

It’s been a fun day sitting at Starbucks and watching the adventures of life happen around me. Hopefully, this will be a return to my routine and I’ll get more adventures in the near future!

Here’s to the next adventure!
