One of the things I really like about Starbucks is that through the years it really has tried to be the corner cafe. It has had varying levels of success in this endeavor but to me, this is what Starbucks is about. It’s a place to get coffee and to enjoy community. Sometimes this happens with the staff at a store. Other times it happens with other regulars. And still other times it just is a convenient place to meet and commune. The latter was most likely what was happening when I entered Starbucks this morning.
Walking in this morning to Starbucks was a surprising experience. There were a LOT of conversations happening. While the small individual tables against the wall were all empty, the center table that is long was completely packed. As I made my way to order my coffee, I noticed that this table all seemed to be one group. They were all talking animatedly with each other. They also all had piles of peanuts in front of them! There was other food on the table, some kind of bread, but the common denominator was the peanuts.
These peanuts looked much like what one would get at a baseball game. They had their shells. The shells were a bit darker than the ones at a baseball game, however. However, they still appeared to be delicious. They also appeared to be very precisely eaten. There were piles of peanuts that hadn’t been broken into yet. They were piled in triangles at each seat at the table. There were little white paper bags it looked like for the shells to go into once the peanuts had been broken into and consumed. They did also have Starbucks beverages but those weren’t nearly as interesting as the piles of peanuts.
The people animatedly continue to talk and presumably consume peanuts. Eventually, they all just packed up and left. I don’t know who they were. I don’t know why they came together. I do know that it was an amusing thing to see and I love seeing how different people enjoy their day!
On to the next adventure!
