I see a lot of first dates at Starbucks. They are almost always awkward and quite often they don’t go super well. Generally this makes it very entertaining to watch though. Today is different. A new couple sits across from me and it seems like things are going very well! However, it is still awkward and there appears to be multiple reasons why. As I was getting set up I noticed that the young man appears to be learning Japanese and was attempting to use it on his Japanese date. They are both new to the area they indicated and while she speaks English, there is a little bit of a language barrier. That doesn’t seem to be a major problem, though.

Before going any further, let’s set the stage. Both are dressed in casual preppy outfits. She wears nice jeans and a white button down that is open and the sleeves are rolled up with a complimentary shirt on underneath. He also is wearing jeans with a tucked in dress shirts. He is wearing brown leather shoes/boots, and she wears canvas shoes. They both have tall black coffees which have barely been touched in the half hour I have been sitting here. The few questions and answers I’ve picked up indicate that they really know next to nothing about each other.

They are sitting in lounge chairs with a small side table between them that they have spent most of the time leaning over. The conversation seems to be animated and happy. There are lots of smiles and laughter. He is clearly the more serious of the two and is rather stiff. She seems very relaxed as they chat away into the afternoon. When he talks, she rests her chin on her hand and is fully engaged. Generally as he finishes whatever statement he is making, she giggles before re-engaging and continuing the conversation.

What their story is or will be, I really don’t know. What I do recognize is that this is a happy moment in time at Starbucks. It is a special moment at Starbucks that is a wonderful reminder of the good things that happen around us every day if we keep our eyes open for it. I wish this couple all the best in the future!

On to the next adventure!

**UPDATE: They ended up leaving together. The never finished their coffee, it got dumped into the garbage as they walked out. They sat in his car for some time before finally driving away.
