It’s a rainy day in Southern California. This tends to impact things and change them a bit for those who live down here. It means people pull up to the drive-throughs and don’t actually open their windows enough to be heard, and then get grumpy when communication is hard. This apparently is followed by them not wanting to open their windows to get their drinks as well, if today is any indication, as I’ve sat in the corner and observed the world operate (or maybe be inoperable?) in the rain.
Rainy days also tend to bring different people into Starbucks. What might have been a quick stop on a normal day turns into a more extended stay. This appears to be what is happening off to my right. In this Starbucks, there is a hallway leading to two bathrooms. In the last half hour, I realized I was hearing giggling coming from the hallway. A quick glance over and it all made sense.
Two girls are in the hallway with their iPhone propped up on one of the doors. They have drinks sitting on the floor next to them. In between the giggles, they are filming what I presume is a popular dance routine. As they wave their arms, spin around, and do some dance I don’t know, I don’t think they realize that half of the store can see them. Or perhaps they simply don’t care. It’s a dry place to dance on a rainy day without getting drenched. Whatever the thought process is, they are having fun dancing the day away with giggles and an occasional sip of a frappuccino.
As I’m writing this, they just moved the phone to the side door of the building. They have also decided to put their hoods up for this new routine. If I had to guess, the lighting is MUCH better with their current setup. Whatever is going on it is equally amusing. It is also much better than the people taking out the bad weather on the baristas in this store (don’t do that!). I love that they can have a place like Starbucks to come and have some fun that isn’t hurting anybody in the rain… and amuse a few of us who keep glancing over as the giggling continues. I wonder if/when/where this will all end up on TikTok.
On to the next adventure!
Update: right after I wrapped up writing this post, one of the baristas went to use the restroom. As he walked around the corners, the girls immediately became embarrassed, with one covering her head with her hands. After a few more giggles and checking the videos (I’m guessing?), they grabbed their drinks and made their way out into the rainy day.
