A middled aged man arrived at Starbucks about ten minutes ago. He sits at one of the high top tables looking around the store. I’ve seen this routine before. It is a meeting of some sort but who the meeting with is in question. He wears a t-shirt and jeans. He looks around the store as he clearly anticipates the arrival of someone. Judging by what he is wearing, this isn’t a date. Generally these types of meetings turn out to be business of some sort. It’s the kind of meeting for something sold online and Starbucks is the safe and neutral place to meet for the transaction.
Eventually, a younger couple arrive out of nowhere with a tattered ceiling fan box. As I watch, he opens the box and I expect there to be something else. Instead, it actually is a ceiling fan… with all the papers included. Assured that what is inside, he hands over five dollars to the couple. They disappear as quickly as they arrive.
Once the couple is gone, the man orders two Frappuccinos which he gets in a tray. Apparently satisfied with his trip to Starbucks, he grabs his new ceiling fan along with his Frappuccinos and head out to his truck where is wife waits.
Interactions at Starbucks always are interesting. Some of them today have been incredibly business like as men in suits conduct business. Others have been people just meeting up to hang out with each other. There are also kids in the store doing homework since it is President’s Day and they have the day off. Starbucks really is a fun people watching place.
