Some of the menu items at Starbucks can be hard to pronounce. Words like macchiato, Frappuccino, ristretto, and even Chai Tea could be included for consideration of things that are hard to pronounce. One of the words that perhaps wouldn’t make the list is mocha. However, today I was proven wrong.

Sitting in a Starbucks in Dallas Texas you get a similar experience as with most other Starbucks stores. There is a variety of different people that come in ordering a variety of different drinks, each with their own preferences. Through the years, I’ve heard a lot of different pronunciations of different menu items. Today I had the pleasure of hearing a new one.

As we were sitting at a fairly busy Starbucks a voice pierced the conversations that were filling up the store. It was a female voice that had an almost parrot-like quality to it. The conversation style very much was more of a squawk more than common speech.

From over at the mobile order station came the squawk “I’m here for my hot mawk-a!” She then proceeded to tell the barista how she likes the mobile order because then she can leave her friends in the car and just come in and get her coffee and get her “mawk-a.”

The barista, to his credit, kept a straight face and was a complete gentleman throughout the moment… which makes me wonder if this has happened before. Perhaps it is a regional thing maybe? I’m not sure. I do know, I’ve never heard the word mocha pronounced that way before and it brought a smile to me and my travel group.

On to the next adventure!
