There are lots of interesting conversations that happen at Starbucks. Sometimes these are friends or colleagues just chatting away. Other times there are first dates that either go well… or not so well. What doesn’t happen very often is a discussion between a man and his elbow. However, it did happen today… and then it escalated quickly.

I was sitting at my normal table at my normal Starbucks on a fairly normal Saturday morning. As I was working away on an article on Daps Magic, I generally listen to music so that I can zone out what is going on around me. Sometimes things get through anyway. I realized I was hearing a discussion from someone that appeared to be doing all the talking. As the discussion continued, I realized that it was very serious. At this point, the music was turned off and I looked over at the table to my right.

There were a couple of people on the long table. One person was deep in thought with headphones on as they were working on something on their laptop. Another person was sitting at the other end or the table, which also happened to be closer to me, with a big bag on the table. It was a duffle bag. However, that wasn’t the most interesting about this scene. I quickly realized that this guy was having a conversation… with his elbow. It clearly wasn’t going well however. The conversation went from serious to heated. At first I thought maybe he was talking to someone on a smart watch or something, but he wasn’t wearing a smart watch. As the conversation turned into an argument it was very clear that he was focuses on yelling at his elbow.

Within a couple of minutes he was yelling at his elbow saying “I can’t keep doing this!” along with some colorful metaphors that involved some choice language. As the one-sided argument continued on the guy now had the attention of the entire store as he was shouting at his elbow and not liking the other side of the conversation. Finally, he stood up and grabbed his bag. He walked to the door, said one more thing to his elbow that was profane in nature, and then stormed out of the store. Unfortunately, he left what looked like a toiletry bag on the table so there is a chance that he might be returning.

I would love to know what the discussion and then argument was about. I am fairly certain I will never know. I will admit, I’m glad he is gone because I wasn’t too keen on having someone yelling profanely at their elbow while standing behind me. All of this goes to show that the adventures at Starbucks can never be predicted and always can be surprising.

On to the next Adventure!
