A Red Cup Day Without a Red Cup

Sometimes things happen right in front of you and you have no clue what is going on. Today is Red Cup day at Starbucks. Being a long-time Starbucks customer and fan, I made my way to my Starbucks this morning to work from my favorite table in the corner.

The table I sit in has two different options for sitting depending on what you want to be facing. One direction allows for a view out the front window of the store and into the parking lot. This is a fun way to sit to watch people come and go into the store. The downside? You see how many people park in the handicap spot without a handicap tag… and how many people just randomly pull into two parking spots because they either don’t want their doors dinged or just can’t park. The other option has my back to the door (not my favorite) and allows for a view of the inside of the store. This includes the register, the handoff, and the door to the restroom.

Recently I’ve been sitting with my back to the door so I don’t get too focused and distracted by how many people park in handicap spots that shouldn’t. Today was an interesting day to be facing inward because of the amount of people coming in looking for these ridiculously popular red plastic cups. It really is amazing at the demand for these cups. It’s equally amazing at how people try to work the system to get extra cups or get them in a way they shouldn’t. But I digress. This isn’t what today’s adventure is about.

As I was sitting here, I generally am mostly focused on my computer and occasionally something grabs my attention in my peripheral vision. This is what happened, in this case. As I was working on an article for Daps Magic, I just happened to look up at the restroom door opening directly in front of me (and across the room). As I did, I saw two middle aged ladies walking out of the restroom together. Unfortunately, the one in front noticed me noticing them walking out. As they walked towards me I got a sinking feeling as I realized there was really no way out of this as they have to walk by me to get out of the store. As they passed my table, literally inches away from me, the lady in the lead looks down at me and goes “whew!” with a bit of a grin and then continued to walk out of the store.

I can only imagine what all of that meant. I did make two more observations about this couple. First off, they didn’t have any drinks from Starbucks in their hands. Second, they didn’t have red cups either!

On to the next adventure!
